We Are Family

We Are Family is one film that I had been wanting to see mainly because it was bringing together Kajol and Kareena Kapoor after a long hiatus. The last time they had shared screen space was in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (K3G) in 2001 in which they had played sisters. So I thought it would be interesting to see how they would fare in a movie where they are vying for the same man's attention. Years ago in Gupt, Bobby Deol had Kajol and Manisha Koirala fighting over him and the expressions of the girls in the song Yeh pyaar kya hai... said it all. Sadly there is no such zing in We Are Family.

The film received commendation for officially acknowledging the original source. But for me this Indian take on the Hollywood movie Stepmom was a let down. Firstly, the writers are not couragous enough to set the story in India. The heart of Stepmom were the two kids. Jena Malone as the teenage daughter warring with her father's new girlfriend and gropping with the reality of her mother's illness was excellent. Liam Aiken when he tells his mother that he will hate Isabel if she wants him to was delightful and sweet. In We Are Family there are three children but not one manages to create ripples in your heart through either acting or plain innocence. Even the leading ladies do not seem to be delivering their best. Neither was I able to sympathize with Kareena Kapoor during her trials when having to take care of the brat pack nor did I shed tears as Kajol suffers through the dreaded disease. For what should have been a three hanky movie, a descrption I had read in a newspaper for K3G, is not able to strike an emotional connect with the audience.

The only point where my eyes watered a little was when I heard Shreya Ghoshal's beautiful rendition of the song Sun le dua. But here too I had a reason to grumble. The song should have had at least one more stanza. The sweetness of Shreya Ghoshal's voice leaves you asking for more. Despite the short length anyone who has had to see a loved one slip by, bit by bit, would still be able to relate to this prayer which they would have repeated a million times. So let me leave you its lyrics:

Film: We Are Family

Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

Lyrics: Irshat Kamil

Singer: Shreya Ghoshal

Tu jo gayi toh soona hoga yeh jahaan
Pheeki pheeki hogi saari yeh daastan
Tumse judi hai har khushi
Tere bina kya hai yahaan
Chaahein tumhein hum maange tumhe
Sun le dua yeh aasman

Chote chote khwaabon ko aa jodenge
Yeh bhi vaada
Na tumhein ab chodenge
Jeena chaahe phir tere liye
Aaankhein na pherenge
Saansein meri tu le le bhale
Ab na tumhein jaane denge

Kahin toh hogi woh

The film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na caught the nation’s attention when it was released in 2008. Imran Khan and Genelia Dsouza became overnight sensations and crowds began calling them by their respective nicknames used in the movie: Rats and Meow. The refreshing songs gained popularity even as they hit the tv screens. However, it was only a week ago that I heard Kahin toh hogi woh... in its entirety. As with many songs that I love this too has few accompaniments with the stress on the vocals. But it was really the lyrics that struck a chord with me and got me listening to it repeatedly.

The song voices my sentiments. Not having someone besides me these days makes me yearn for the world:

where we will be together (Kahin toh hogi woh duniya jahaan tu mere saath hai),
where there will be days when I will wake up in the morning to find him gazing at me lovingly (Hogi jahaan subah teri palkon ki kirano mein),
where every night I will fall asleep in his arms (Lori jahaan chaand ki sune teri baahon mein),
where there will be a magic of sorts every time we meet (Hai nasha teri meri har mulakaat mein),
and where at any and every pretext we will kiss each other (Hoton se hoton ko chumte o rehte hai hum har baat pe).

Believe me when I say that only where he is, is my laughter, my happiness... my life. (Jahaan hai tu, meri hassi meri khushi meri jaan)

Here is the full song for you to enjoy:

Film: Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na
Music: A. R. Rahman
Lyrics: Abbas Tyrewala
Singers: Rashid Ali and Vasundhara Das

Kahin toh... Kahin toh hogi woh
Duniya jahaan tu mere saath hai
Jahaan main jahaan tu
Aur jahaan bas tere mere jazbaat hai
Hogi jahaan subah teri
Palkon ki kirano mein
Lori jahaan chaand ki
Sune teri baahon mein

Jaane na kahan woh duniya hai
Jaane na woh hai bhi ya nahi
Jahaan meri zindagi mujhse
Itni khafa nahi...

Saasein kho gai hai kiski aahon mein
Main kho gai hoon jaane kiski baahon mein
Manzilon se rahein dhoondti chali
Khud kho gai hai manzil kahin raahon mein

Kahin toh... Kahin toh hai nasha
Teri meri har mulakaat mein
Hoton se hoton ko
Chumte o rehte hai hum har baat pe
Kehti hai fiza jahan
Teri zameen aasman
Jahaan hai tu, meri hassi
Meri khushi meri jaan

Jaane na kahan woh duniya hai
Jaane na woh hai bhi ya nahi
Jahaan meri zindagi mujhse
Itni khafa nahi...

Kaise mujhe tum....

This year I began my account of hindi movies by watching Aamir Khan's Ghajini in Bangalore. I did not like the film that much. But I came out loving one of the songs Kaise mujhe tum... from it. I suppose the reason for this is that the lyrics so beautifully convey what you feel when you've finally found your special someone.

It tells how when its just you and your thoughts, you wonder how did this miracle happen so much so that you can't believe your luck (Kaise mujhe tum mil gayi... Kismat pe aaye na yakeen...).

Then when you actually get a chance to spend some time with this person it leaves you confused because you are unable to decide whether you should just keep gazing at him or close your eyes and just go on endelessly hearing his voice full of love (Dekhoon tumhe ya main sunoo?).

There's only one question that you keep on asking the man in front of you. What took you so long? Why did you not come in my life earlier? (Kyon pehle na aayi tum?)

You remember the times you lamented at God asking Him why you were alone (Main toh yeh sochta tha ke aaj kal... Uparwaale ko fursat nahi). However, now you can't help but thank Him enough everyday with your faith in Him having increased by manifold (Meri nazar mein chadh gaya... Rutbe mein woh aur badh gaya).

Having realized "this is the one" you are left without doubts that you will never let go. Seasons may change but you'll always be there for your beloved every moment from hereon (Badlengi rituen ada ... Par main rahoongi sada... Har lamha har pal).

With that background let me put the lyrics of the entire song for you to savour.

Film: Ghajini
Music: A. R. Rahman
Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi
Singers: Benny Dayal and Shreya Ghoshal

Kaise mujhe tum mil gayi?
Kismat pe aaye na yakeen
Utar aayi jheel mein
Jaise chaand utarta hai kabhi
Houle houle dheere se

Gunguni dhoop ki tarah se
Tarranum mein tum
Chuke mujhe
Guzri ho yoon
Dekhoon tumhe Ya main sunoo?
Tum ho sukoon
Tum ho junoo
Kyun pehle na aayi tum?

Kaise mujhe tum mil gayi?
Kismat pe aaye na yakeen...

Main toh yeh sochta tha ke aaj kal
Uparwaale ko fursat nahi
Phir bhi tumhe banaake woh
Meri nazar mein chadh gaya
Rutbe mein woh aur badh gaya
Zindagi sitar ho gayi
Rimjhim malhar ho gayi
Mujhe aata nahi kismat pe apni yakeen
Kaise mujhko mil gayi?

Badle raaste jharne aur nadi
Badle ret ki tim tim
Chedhe zindagi dhun koi nayi
Badle barkha ki rimjhim
Badlengi rituen ada
Par main rahoongi sada
Usi tarah teri baahon mein baahein daalke
Har lamha har pal

Kaise mujhe tum mil gayi?
Kismat pe aaye na yakeen...

Way back into love

About a week ago during a tea session my boss said that in his opinion girls handled the matters of the heart much better than boys as they are emotionally stronger. I have on the other hand have always thought that boys are more practical than girls which gives them a certain edge.

If my boss is right then how do you explain all the tears shed by heartbroken girls?

If I am not wrong then why do I find some guys almost becoming direction less in life?

I suppose one cannot simply label it as a boys versus girl scenario. Afterall we are individuals with our own ways of coping with everything bad that love brings. Some people when grieving hide under a shell. Some immerse themselves deeply into work. Some are just unable to function while some keep on acting as if everything is fine.

Our reactions may all be different but there's a wish which everybody has in common... its the wish to find a way back into love. As much as it scares us we still hope for there to be someone who will make our return journey worth it. :)

Here is a song which very simply and beautifully talks about all this.

Film: Music and Lyrics

Music: Adam Schlesinger

Lyrics: Adam Schlesinger

Singers: Hugh Grant and Haley Bennett

I've been living with a shadow overhead
I've been sleeping with a cloud above my bed
I've been lonely for so long
Trapped in the past
I just can't seem to move on

I've been hiding all my hopes and dreams away
Just in case I ever need them again someday
I've been setting aside time
To clear a little space in the corners of my mind

All I want to do is find a way back into love
I can't make it through without a way back into love

I've been watching but the stars refuse to shine
I've been searching but I just don't see the signs
I know that it's out there
There's got to be something for my soul somewhere

I've been looking for someone to shed some light
Not somebody just to get me through the night
I could use some direction
And I'm open to your suggestions

All I want to do is find a way back into love
I can't make it through without a way back into love

And if I open my heart again
I guess I'm hoping you'll be there for me in the end
There are moments when I don't know if it's real
Or if anybody feels the way I feel
I need inspiration
Not just another negotiation

All I want to do is find a way back into love
I can't make it through without a way back into love

And if I open my heart to you
I'm hoping you'll show me what to do
And if you help me to start again
You know that I'll be there for you in the end

How to cheer up yourself?

A couple of days back I was feeling really bugged and irritated. In a somewhat off mood I reached home. I even placed "Need cheering up!" as a custom message on gtalk. But by the time some of my friends IMed me back to find out what was wrong at my end, I had already begun to feel happy. How come? Read on to know the different ways to give yourself a kick.

1. Watch any rerun of the Friends series. *It got me laughing out loudly.*

2. Plan a vacation for pure pleasure and leisure. *I am already thinking about having one to London having realised that conference related trips are always hectic.*

3. Pursue an old forgotten hobby of yours for a day. *I have decided that tomorrow being Saturday I'll do some amateur sketching.*

4. Shop but not necessarily till you drop. Try out t-shirts, skirts, kurtas, etc that are typically not your style. You might end up discovering liking the change. Plus remember there's no charge on entering the trial room. At the same time do splurge a bit. *What this means is that I might be paying a visit to Westside on Sunday. :-)*

5. Dance. Put on some dhinchak music and just let yourself go. *This whole week Daddy is going to be in Bangalore so now you know how I am going to keep myself entertained.*

6. Some people say exercise. Exercising produces endorphins and endorphins make you feel happy. *Since the roads and footpaths have been set right starting from NCL to my place, a distance of about 3.5 kms, thanks to the Commonwealth Youth Games being held in Pune, I have started going home by walking. Lets see how long can I keep up with it.*

7. Read books that you used to gorge on in school. *Even now sometimes I get hold of my old Enid Blyton's like St. Clares and Five Find Outers and reading them always make me smile.*

8. Get a new hair cut and also get everybody's attention the next day. *I already did this before leaving for Sydney. So can't repeat the act so soon again. :p*

9. Party and get to know new people. This is what a friend suggested to me. *I think I'll follow this advice during my Singapore trip. ;-)*

and finally

10. Simply talk to/chat with some mad cap friends of yours. *This one always works for me. Hehehe*

So go ahead and list out your favourite things, like in this famous song from The Sound of Music, which will keep you away from feeling sad.

Movie: The Sound of Music
Music: Richard Rodgers
Lyrics: Oscar Hammerstein II
Singer: Julie Andrews

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad

Tip tip tip tip baarish

The weather has changed here in Pune and so have I along with it. Two weeks back it was sweltering and hot, with sun rays that were practically roasting my skin. Along with that I was feeling overworked. I wanted to finish some calculations as soon as possible. But they were taking there own time. All this was getting on my nerves.

Then suddenly one fine day the sky was filled with dark clouds which burst out pouring. The fury was such that it reminded me of the incessant Mumbai rains. Due to the heavy downpour the electricity went out and so all computers were shut down. I should have cursed the raingods but instead I felt light headed.

Since then its been a lovely atmosphere here. There is a cool breeze blowing all the time in which you enjoy letting your hair down. There are thick clouds but it only drizzles and you don't mind getting sprayed by those drops of water. In fact its refreshing. I am no longer fixing any deadline for my work. I've decided to follow the que sera sera rule and let things happen at their own speed. I am happy to sing two of my favourite rain songs again and again whenever I have nothing else to do. I am putting the lyrics below.
Film: Jurmana
Music: R. D. Burman
Lyrics: Anand Bakshi
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Saawan ke jhoole padhe
Tum chale aao
Tum chale aao
Tum chale aao
Saawan ke jhoole pade...
Aanchal naa chode mera
Paagal hui hai pawan
Ab kya karoon main jatan
Dhadke jiyaa jaise panchhi ude
Saawan ke jhoole padhe...
Dil ne pukara tumhe
Yaadon ke parades se
Aati hain jo des se
Hum us dagar pe hain kab se khadhe
Saawan ke jhoole padhe...
Jab hum mile the piya
Tum kitne nadaan the
Hum kitane anjaan the
Baali umariya mein naina ladhe
Saawan ke jhoole padhe...

Film: Khamoshi-The Musical
Music: Jatin-Lalit
Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri
Singers: Kavita Krishnamurti and Shraddha Pandit

Mausam ke sargam ko sun
Kya gaa raha hai samaa
Tu bhi gaa tere sang
Gaaye saara jahan
Gaaye ja Gaaye ja Gaaye ja
Har sur pe dil yoon dhadke
Ke saanson mein agan bhadke
Sun kar ye sada
Har sur...
Aise aaj gaa khamoshi bol uthe
Palkein bheeg jaayein jal barse bina ghata
Gaaye ja...
Phir ek din le jaayega
Ghunghta tera uthaayega
Koi rajkumar
Phir ek...
Phir yeh roop rang
Ban jaayega chaman
Hoga ang-ang ek masti bhari phuhaar
Gaaye ja...
Mausam ke sargam...

Jab We Met again

For some reason the movie Jab We Met has grown me on. I guess in a year filled with insipid films it was a surprisingly simple romantic tale. Besides I love its music. Since Daddy gifted me the audio cd I've been listening to it practically everyday. All the numbers are different and you can choose a song depending on your mood. If you want to dance away your blues then you've got Nagada Nagada and Mauja Hi Mauja overflowing with energy. If you want to land in a dream world then Tum Se Hi will do the trick. Whenever I hear the song Aao Milon Chale I feel like going away on a road trip. Yeh Ishq Hai... always makes me feel happy while Aaoge Jab Tum O Saajana... though a classical sad song also talks of hope.

I am putting here lyrics of two of my favourites from the above mix.

Aaoge jab tum o saajana

Music: Sandesh Shandilya
Lyrics: Irshat Kamil
Singer: Ustad Rashid Khan

Aaoge jab tum o saajana
Angana phool khilenge
Barsega saawan barsega saawan
Jhoom jhoom ke
Do dil aise milenge
Aaoge jab tum o saajana...

Naina tere kajarare hain
Nainon pe hum dil haare hain
Anjaane hi tere nainon ne
Waade kiye kai saare hain
Saanson ki ley
Madham chale
Tose kahe
Barsega saawan...

Chanda ko taakoon raaton mein
Hai zindagi tere haathon mein
Palkon pe jhilmil taare hain
Aana bhari barsaaton mein
Sapno ka jahaan
Hoga khila khila
Barsega saawan...

Tum se hi

Music: Pritam
Lyrics: Irshat Kamil
Singer: Mohit Chauhan

Na hai yeh paana
Na khona hi hai
Tera na hona jaane
Kyon hona hi hai
Tumse hi din hota
Surmai shaam aati hai
Tumse hi tumse hi
Har ghadi saans aati hai
Zindagi keh laati hai
Tumse hi tumse hi
Na hai yeh...

Aankhon mein aankhen teri
Baahon mein baahein teri
Mera na mujhme kuch raha
Hua kya?
Baaton mein baatein teri
Raatein saugaate teri
Kyon tera sab kuch ho gaya
Hua kya?
Main kahin bhi jaata hoon
Tumse hi mil jaata hoon
Tumse hi tumse hi
Shor mein khamoshi hai
Thodi si behoshi hai
Tumse hi tumse hi

Aadha sa waada kabhi
Aadhe se zyaada kabhi
Ji chaahe kar loon is tarah
Wafa ka
Chode na choote kabhi
Tode na toote kabhi
Jo dhaaga tumse judh gaya
Wafa Ka
Main tera sarmaaya hoon
Jo bhi main ban paaya hoon
Tumse hi tumse hi
Raastein mil jaate hain
Manzilein mil jaati hain
Tumse hi tumse hi
Na hai yeh...

Rules - pyar ka superhit formula

There is something inherently sweet about this movie: Rules - Pyar Ka Superhit Formula that whenever I watch it I can't help but smiling. It could be because I am, putting it mildly, an admirer of Aamir Khan and a succour for romantic comedies which are rare in Hindi filmdom.

The story is very simple.

Radha (Meera Vasudevan), an assistant photographer, is a huge fan of the model Vikram Verma (Milind Soman). One day her agency gets to shoot an ad campaign with Vikram and his girlfriend Maggie (Namrata Barua). Eventhough they are now working together Vikram does not notice Radha. Enters Daadima (Tanuja) who decides to help out her grandaughter by teaching her aakarshan ke paanch niyam (5 rules of attraction).

Rule No. 1: Aadmi ka dhyaan paana ho toh use dhyaan mat do. If you want to catch a man's attention then don't give him any attention.

That day Vikram asks Radha her name.

Rule No. 2: Aadmi ke peeche bhaagna use khud se dur bhagaana hai. Use bhaagne do tumhaare peeche. Running after man makes him run away from you. Let him come after you.

That day Vikram shares a taxi with Radha.

Rule No. 3: Aadmi ke liye hamesha ek raaz ban kar raho. Have a certain mystery about yourself in front of the boy.

That day Vikram dances with Radha in a party and drops her home.

Rule No. 4: Aadmi se hamesha ek baat chupake rakhna ki usme tumhe dard pahuchaane ki taaqat hai. Don't let the man know that he has the capacity to hurt you.

That day Vikram kisses Radha.

Rule No. 5: Agar aadmi se pyaar ka izhaar karwaana ho toh uski bahut tareef karo. If you want to make a man confess his love to you then you should praise him a lot.

That day Vikram says I love you to Radha.

By following these rules Radha gets what she wants afterall. But thats when it strikes her that she had been playing tricks on Vikram all along... that by playing by the rules she did not give him any choice but to love her. She tells him the truth believing that she couldn't be in love with him otherwise she wouldn't have done any of this.

Daadima takes charge for a second time to bring the two together knowing that Radha is being foolish. She remarks "Aakarshan ke toh phir bhi niyam hote hain par pyar ke... koi nahi."

In the climax of the film Radha climbs inside a hot air balloon to take some pictures during the shooting of a music video and it accidentally leaves ground. Our hero jumps to catch hold of the rope hanging from the balloon and climbs up to rescue his lady love!!

The following dialogues however save the ending from becoming melodramatic.

"Radha: Jab main chaudah saal ki thi toh maine ek photo dekha aur mujhe pyaar ho gaya. Woh tumhara photo tha. Jab main badi ho rahi thi pyar mere liye sirf ek khayal tha. Pyar ki kain tasveerein banaa rakhi thi maine apne mann mein... filmon se, romantic kitaabon se, gaano se. Aur har us tasveer ko main pyar samajhti rahi. Laal gulaabo ka ek guldasta, candle light dinner, barsaat mein saath saath bheegna, Valentine's Day pe kisko ek teddy gift karna, safed ghode pe ek rajkumar ka aana, bageeche mein gaane gaana, pyar bhare khat likhna, Bobby mein Rishi Kapoor aur Dimple ka ek kamre mein akele bandh ho jaana...

Lekin ab main jaan gayi hoon woh pyar nahi hai. Pyar woh hai jo...

Vikram: Jo tum mere liye mehsoos karti ho. "

Radha's description of love as 14 year old is so true. It comes very close to what I still associate with romance. So also are the lyrics of the song Kabhi phool dena... which tells what all happens in the name of love.

Kabhi phool dena...

Kabhi phool dena manaane ke liye
Kabhi dur rehba sataane ke liye
Aur kabhi kabhi khamosh baithe
Yunhi baahon ke sahaare
Suraj bujhaana saagar kinare
Phir raaton ko chaand ugaana
Waise pyar ke naam yeh toh yaaron
Sab hua hai
Ab yeh pyar bhi ho jaaye bas
Itni dua hai
Kabhi raahon mein phirte rehna
Bina kahe bas yunhi sunte rehna
Kammo mein uski saanson mein
Jalte hue pighalte rehna
Its only love I want to
Hold on to
And forever let it stay
Its only love that I need
Its only... only love

Janmo ke waade
Har baat pe kasam
Kabhi jaan kehna
Kabhi kehna haan sanam
Aur sau sau baar yeh kehna
Le aayenge hum taare zameen pe
Jo kahoge toh jaan bhi denge
Waise pyar ke naam yeh toh yaaron
Sab hua hai
Ab yeh pyar bhi ho jaaye bas
Itni dua hai
In lamhon ko rokne ki
Woh naakaam koshishein karna
Jo guzre hain saath unko
Phir yaadein banaake rakhna
Its only love I want to
Hold on to
And forever let it stay
Its only love that I need
Its only... only love

Tum yaad aaye

Yaad kiya hai maine tumhe
Suraj ke ugne se
Uske bujhne tak
Chand ki roshni mein
Taaron ki chaadar ke saath

Yaad kiya hai maine tumhe
Tapti garmi mein
Kaanpti sardi mein
Patjhad ke mausam mein
Aur saawan ki rimjhim boondon ke saath

Yaad kiya hai maine tumhe
Shorogul mein
Khamoshi mein
Kabhi tanhayi mein
Hoti thi jab kabhi tamaam logon ke saath

Yaad kiya hai maine tumhe
Naaraaz hokar
Kabhi pyar se
Kabhi hanste hue
Kabhi aansuon ki barkha ke saath

Yaad kiya hai maine tumhe

Har pal har ghadi
"Kya mujhe kiya tumne kabhi yaad?"

Dil mein is sawaal ke saath

I was inspired by Javed Akhtar's lyrics of the song Tum Yaad Aaye to pen the above few lines. Below is original one for comparison.

Album: Tum Yaad Aaye

Music: Raju Singh

Lyrics: Javed Akhtar

Singer: Alka Yagnik

Jab geet baharon ne gaaye
Tum yaad aaye
Jab khushboo ke badal chaaye
Tum yaad aaye
Jab subahon ne rang chalkaaye
Tum yaad aaye
Jab mehke shaamon ke saaye
Tum yaad aaye
Tum yaad aaye

Jab koi sunehra din aaya
Jab mausam jhooma lehraya
Jab rut ne li ek angadayi
Jab dhoop mein garmi si aayi
Jab rang naye kaliyon ko mile
Jab daali daali phool khile
Jab phoolon pe bhavrein mandalaaye
Tum yaad aaye
Jab geet...

Jab koi sunehri raat aayi
Jab taaron ki baaraat aayi
Jab ambar mein taare damke
Jab aangan mein jugnu chamke
Jab hui ghaneri khamoshi
Jab chaayi halki behoshi
Jab raat ne tan mann pighalaaye
Tum yaad aaye
Jab geet...

Gym's peppy songs

Here are the lyrics of the some of the songs that are played in gym and which I happen to love coz they are very foot-tapping and even to some extent motivating. :)

Movie: Lakshya

Haan yehi rasta hai tera
Tune ab jaana hai
Haan yehi sapna hai tera
Tune pehchaana hai
Tujhe ab ye dikhaana hai
Roke tujhko aandhiyaan
Ya zameen aur aasmaan
Paayega jo lakshya hai tera
Lakshya toh har haal mein paana hai
Mushkil koyi aa jaaye toh
Parbat koyi takraaye toh
Taaqat koyi dikhlaaye toh
Toofaan koyi mandlaaye toh
Mushkil koyi aa jaaye toh
Parbat koyi takraaye toh
Barse chaahe ambar se aag
Lipte chaahe pairon se naag
Paayega jo lakshya hai tera
Lakshya toh har haal mein paana hai...

Himmat se jo koyi chale
Dharti hile kadmon tale
Kya dooriyaan kya faasle
Manzil lage aake gale
Himmat se jo koyi chale
Dharti hile kadmon tale
Tu chal yunhi ab subaho-shaam
Rukna jhukna nahin tera kaam
Paayega jo lakshya hai tera
Lakshya toh har haal mein paana hai...

Haan yehi rasta hai tera
Tune ab jaana hai
Haan yehi sapna hai tera
Tune pehchaana hai
Tujhe ab ye dikhaana hai
Lakshya toh har haal mein paana hai

Movie: Fight Club

Yeh diljawan aa rahe hain
Hum dilon pe mehfilon pe
Ek nasha laa rahe hain

Kuch yoon dilon ko thaame
Aa rahe ho dekhne ko tum naye hungame
Milke raho fight club
You got to go Fight Club
Go go go go Fight Club

Door hai shor hai
Hum aankhon mein hai sharaare
Dil jo chahe khibch laaye

Pyar bhi takraar bhi
Aur jeet bhi haar bhi hai
You got to go Fight Club

Movie: Metro

In dino dil mera
Mujhse hai keh raha
Tu khwaab saja
Tu ji le zara
Hai tujhe bhi ijaazat
Karle tu bhi mohabbat
Hai tujhe..
In dino...

Berang si hai badi zindagi
Kuch rang to bharoon
Main apni tanhaayi ke vaaste
Ab kuch toh karoon
Berang...
Jab mile thodi fursat
Mujhse karle mohabbat
Hai tujhe bhi ijaazat
Karle tu bhi mohabbat
Usko chupaakar main sabse kabhi
Le chaloon kahin door
Ankhon ke pyaalon se peeta rahoon
Uske chehre ka noor
Usko...
Is zamaane se chup kar
Poori karloon main hasrat
Hai tujhe bhi ijaazat
Karle tu bhi mohabbat
In dino...

Mujhe kuch pal de ghurbat ke

Fakiran teri chaahat ke

Rahe bechain dil kab tak

Mile kuch pal toh raahat ke

Chaahat pe ishq pe haan

Mita doon luta doon

Main apni khudi

Yaar pe haan luta doon mita doon

Main yeh hasti

Ya ali...

Bina tere na ek pal ho

Bina tere kabhi kal ho

Yeh dil ban jaaye ek pathhar

Na isme koi hulchul ho

Sanam pe haan

Ishq pe haan

Mita doon luta doon

Main apani khudi

Kasam se haan luta doon mita doon

Main yeh hastii

Ya ali...

Lagaan (2): songs

The music of Lagaan has been composed by A. R. Rahman and the lyrics have been penned by Javed Akhtar. Each song has been aptly placed in the film. So here along with all the lyrics I'll also mention a little of the story around the points where the songs appear.

Ghanan ghanan...

The movie is set in a village called Champaner which is facing drought. As the narrator Amitabh Bachchan says "sookhi aankhen aankhen aakhash tatol rahi hain" (parched eyes are looking at the skies in hope). And then suddenly the villagers see dark clouds coming their way and in the excitement of the possibility of rain and all the beauty that it will bring, start singing:

Ghanan ghanan ghir ghir aaye badra
Ghane ghanghor kaare chaaye badra
Dhamak dhamak goonje badra ke danke
Chamak chamak dekho bijuria chamke
Mann dhadkaaye badarwa
Mann dhadkaaye badarwa
Mann mann dhadkaaye badarwa
Kaale megha kaale megha

Paani toh barsaao
Bijuri ki talwar nahi
Boondon ke baan chalaao

Megha chaaye barkha laaye
Ghir ghir aaye ghirke aaye
Kahe yeh mann machal machal
Na yun chal sambhal sambhal
Gaye din badal tu ghar se nikal
Barasne waala hai ab amrit jal
Duvidha ke din bit gaye
Bhaiyya malhar sunao
Bijuri ki talwar nahi
Boondon ke baan chalaao
Ghanan ghanan...

Ras agar barsega kaun phir tarsega
Koyaliya gaayegi baithi munderon par
Jo panchi gaayenge naye din aayenge
Ujale muskura denge andheron par
Prem ki barkha mein bheege bheege tan mann
Dharti pe dekhenge paani ka darpan
Jaiyyo tum jahan jahan
Dekhiyo wahan wahan
Yehi ik sama ki dharti yahan
Hai pehne saat rangon ki chunariya
Ghanan ghanan...

Pedhon par jhoole daalo
Aur unchi peng badhao
Kaale megha kaale megha
Paani toh barsaao
Bijuri ki talwar nahi
Boondon ke baan chalaao

Aayi hai rut matwaali bichaane hariyali
Ki apne sang mein layi hai saawan ko
Yeh bijuri ki payal yeh badal ka aanchal
Sajaane laayi hai dharti ki dulhan ko
Daali daali pehnegi phoolon ke kangan
Sukh ab barsega aangan aangan
Khilegi ab kali kali
Hasegi ab gali gali
Hawa jo chali toh rut lagi bhali
Jaala de jo tan mann woh dhoop dhali

Kaale megha kaale megha
Paani toh barsaao
Bijuri ki talwar nahi
Boondon ke baan chalaao
Ghanan ghanan...

Mitwa...

Bhuvan has accepted the sharat (condition) of beating the British officers in a game of cricket to get pardoned from having to pay lagaan (taxes) for three years. If he loses the whole province will have to cough up triple tax. The task is monumental. But with sach (truth) and saahas (courage) on his side Bhuvan starts gathering his team. As he sings aaja re aaja re... he asks the villagers to join him and have hope (aasa) that better days come (sukh bhare din aayenge).

Har sant kahe sadhu kahe
Sach aur saahas hai jiske mann mein
Anth mein jeet usiki rahe

Aaja re aaja re
Aaja re aaja re
Bhale kitne lambe ho raste ho
Thake na tera yeh tan ho
Aaja re aaja re
Sunle pukaare dagariya
Rahe na yeh raste taraste ho
Tu aaja re
Is dharti ka hai raja tu yeh baat jaanle tu
Kathinaayi se takara ja tu
Nahi haar maanle tu
Mitwa sun mitwa tujhko kya dar hai re
Yeh dharti apni hai apna ambar hai re
Tu aaja re...

Sunlo re mitwa...
Jo hai tumhre mann mein
Wo hi hamre mann mein
Jo sapna hai tumra
Sapna wo hi hamra hai
Jeewan mein
Haan... chale hum liye
Aasa ke diye
Naynan mein
Diye hamri aasaon ke kabhi bujh na paayen
Kabhi aandhiyan jo aake inko bujhaaye
Mitwa sun mitwa...

Sunlo re mitwa...
Purwa bhi gaayegi
Masti bhi chaayegi
Mil ke pukaaro toh
Phoolon waali jo rut hai
Aaayegi
Haan sukh bhare din
Dukh ke bin
Laayegi
Hum tum sajaayein aao rangon ke mele
Rehte ho bolo kahe tum yun akele
Mitwa sun mitwa...
Har sant kahe...

Radha kaise na jale...

Elizabeth has started helping the villagers to learn cricket. She is invited to the celeberations of Janmashtami (Lord Krishna's birth). Gauri is feeling jealous of the attention Bhuvan is bestwoing upon Elizabeth. The situation is not different from the jalan (jeaolousy) felt by Radha on seeing Lord Krishen surrounded by beautiful gopis. Gauri uses the song to express her own fears.

Madhuban mein jo Kanhaiya kisi gopi se mile
Kabhi muskaaye kabhi chede kabhi baat kare
Radha kaise na jale? Radha kaise na jale?
Aag tan man mein lage
Radha kaise na jale? Radha kaise na jale?

Madhuban mein bhale Kanha kisi gopi se mile
Mann mein toh Radha ke hi prem ke hain phool khile
Kisliye Radha jale? Kisliye Radha jale?
Bina soche samjhe
Kisliye Radha jale? Kisliye Radha jale?

Gopiyan taare hain chaand hai Radha
Phir kyon hai usko biswaas aadha
Kanha ji jo sada idhar udhar dhyan rahe
Radha bechari ko phir apne pe kya maan rahe
Gopiyan aani jaani hai Radha toh mann ki raani hai
Saanjh sakhare nadiya kinare
Radha Radha hi Kanha pukaare
Banhon ke haar jo daale koi Kanha ke gale
Radha kaise na...

Mann mein ha Radhe ko Kanha jo basaaye
Toh Kanha kahe ko usse na bataaye?
Prem ki apni alag boli alag bhaasa hai
Baat nayanon se ho Kanha ki yehi aasa hai
Kanha ke jo nayana hain
Cheen gopiyon ke chaina hain
Mili najariya hui bawariya
Gori gori si koi gujariya
Kanha ka pyar kisi gopi ke mann mein jo pale
Kisliye Radha jale...
Radha kaise na...

O ri chori...

Bhuvan finally confesses to Gauri that he loves her and cannot think of a life without her. Gauri tells him the truth of him being the only one for her. Oblivious to this is Elizabeth who has developed feelings for Bhuvan. She is dreaming her own dreams of being with Bhuvan and sings happily in the confines of her palace "Yes I'm in love".

O ri chori...
O ri chori maan bhi le baat mori
Maine pyar tujhi se hai kiya
Tere bin main jiya toh kya jiya
Tere nayanon mein yeh jo kaajal hai
Sapno ka baadal hai
Mann tere hi kaaran pagal hai
O goriya...

O re chore...
O re chore dil se nikle bol more
Maine pyar tujhi se kiya
Haan... main tujhko hi maana hai piya
Tune thama aaj yeh aanchal hai
Mann mein ek hulchul hai
Main na bhooloongi yeh woh pal hai
Sawariya...

My heart it speaks a thousand words
I feel eternal bliss
The roses pout their scarlet mouths
Like offering a kiss
No drop of rain no glowing flame
Has ever been so pure
If being in love can feel like this
Then I am in love for sure

More mann mein...
More mann mein thi jo baat chupi aayi hai jabaan par
More dil mein kahin ek teer ho tha aaya hai kamaan par
Sun sun re sajan rahe janam janam
Hum prem nagar ke baasi
Thaame thaame haath chale saath saath
Kabhi doori ho na jara si
Chaloon main sang sang teri raah mein
Bas teri raah mein
Sawariyan...

Koi pooche toh main boloon kya ke mujhko hua hai kya
More ang ang mein hai sugandh jo tune hai chu liya
Tan mehka mehka mann behka behka
Mujhe tu gulaab si laage
Jo hai yeh nikhaar aur yeh singaar
Toh kyon na kaamna jaage
Tera ujala ujala jo roop hai
Yauvan ki dhoop hai
Goriya...

O ri chori..
Yes I'm in love...
O re chore...

Chale chalo...

The Champaner cricket team is formed. Bhuvan, Deva, Ismail, Arjan, Baagha, Bhura, Lakha, Kachra, Goli, Guran and Issar Kaka are now waiting for the day to come when they'll be able to beat their oppressors at their own game. They are encouraging each other to keep going as they sing:

Baar baar haan bolo yaar haan
Apni jeet ho unki haar haan
Koi humse jeet na paaye
Chale chalo chale chalo
Mit jaave jo takraave
Chale chalo chale chalo
Ghan ghor andhera chaave
Chale chalo chale chalo
Koi raah mein na tham jaave
Chale chalo chale chalo
Toot gayi jo ungli uthi
Paancho mili toh ban gayo muthi
Eka badhta hi jaave
Chale chalo chale chalo
Koi kitna bhi behkaave
Chale chalo chale chalo

Koi na ab roke tujhe toke tujhe
Tod de bandhan saare
Mila hai kya hoke tujhe nirbal
Tu hi bata
Kabhi na dukh jhelenge khelenge
Aise ke dusman haare
Ki ab toh le lenge
Himmat ka rasta
Dharti hila denge sanko dikha denge
Raja kya parja kya ho...
Hum jag pe chaayenge ab yeh bataayenge
Hum logon ka darja kya ho...
Ab darr na mann mein aave
Chale chalo chale chalo
Har bedhi ab khul jaave
Chale chalo chale chalo

Chala hi chal haanf nahi kaap nahi
Raah mein ab tu raahi
Thakan ka saanp nahi ab tujhe dasne paaye
Wohi jo tera haakin hai jaalim hai
Ki kai jisne tabaahi
Ghar uska pachim hai yahan na rukne paaye
Dharti hila denge sanko dikha denge
Raja kya parja kya ho...
Hum jag pe chaayenge ab yeh bataayenge
Hum logon ka darja kya ho...
Jo hona hai jo jaave
Chale chalo chale chalo
Ab sar na koi jhukaave
Chale chalo chale chalo

Baar baar haan...

O Paalanhaare...

The final day of the 3 day test match remains. The Champaner team is 99 for 4. It is way behind reaching the final target of 323 runs. With Ismail's leg badly injured and other good batsmen having got out Bhuvan has to somehow achieve the near impossible with help of the weaker members. In despair all the villagers call out to God (Paalanhaare) to bring them out of the darkness (andhiyaare) into the light (ujiyaare).

O Paalanhaare nirgun aur nyaare
Tumhre bin hamra kaunhu naahi
Hamri uljhan suljha o bhagwan
Tumhre bin hamra kaunhu naahi
Tumhai hamka ho sambhaale
Tumhai humre rakhwaale
Tumhre bin hamra kaunhu naahi

Chanda mein tumhai toh bhare ho chandni
Suraj mein ujaala tumhai se
Yeh ganan hai magan
Tumhai toh diye ho ise taare
Bhagwan yeh jeewan
Tumhai na sawaaroge toh
Kya koi sawaare
O paalanhaare...

Jo suno toh kahe
Prabhu hamri hai binti
Dukhi jan ko dheeraj do
Haare nahi woh kabhi dukh se
Tum nirbal ko raksha do
Reh paaye nirbal sukh se
Bhakti ko shakti do
Jag ke jo swaami ho
Itni toh araj suno
Hain path mein andhiyaare
De do vardaan mein ujiyaare
O paalanhare...

O paalanhare
O paalanhare

Mera kuch saamaan

Film: Ijjazat
Music: R. D. Burman

Mera kuch saamaan
Tumhare paas padha hai
Ho... saawan ke kuch bheege bheege din rakhe hain
Aur mere ek khat mein lipti raat padhi hai
Woh raat bujha do
Mera woh saamaan lauta do
Mera kuch...

Patjhad hai kuch, hai na? hmmm?

Ho... patjhad mein kuch patton ke
Girne ke aahat
Kaanon mein ek baar pehenke lautayee thi
Patjhad ki woh shaakh abhi tak kaanp rahi hai
Woh shaakh gira do
Mera woh saamaan lauta do
Woh shaakh...

Ek akeli chatri mein jab aadhe-aadhe bheeg rahe the
Aadhe sookhe aadhe geele sookha toh mein le aayi thi
Geela mann shaayad bistar ke paas padha ho
Woh bhijwa do
Mera woh saamaan lauta do

Ek sau solha chaand ki raatein
Ek tumhare kandhe ka til
Gili mehndi ki khushboo
Jhooth moot ke shikwe kuch
Jhooth moot ke waade bhi sab
Yaad kara dun
Sab bhijwa do
Mera woh saamaan lauta do
Sab bhijwa...

Ek ijazzat de do bas
Jab isko dafanaaoongi
Main bhi wahin so jaaoongi
Main bhi wahin so jaaoongi

The song Mera kuch saamaan... has been soulfully rendered by Asha Bhosle in the film Ijaazat, meaning permission, starring Rekha, Naseeruddin Shah and Anuradha Patel. In the movie Naseeruddin Shah and Anuradha Patel were in love but N. Shah gets married to Rekha. This song comes at a point when Rekha tells her husband to send away all of Anuradha's things (saamaan) that were lying in their house. But as the lyrics tell us the things that Anuradha wants back are very different. What she asks for are the rain soaked days (saawan ke kuch bheege bheege din...), the night she had spent writing a letter (mere ek khat mein lipti raat padhi hai), her wet heart (geela mann shaayad bistar ke paas padha ho), the insipid fights (jhooth moot ke shikwe kuch) and the silly promises (jhooth moot ke waade bhi sab).

Often those who've lost in love wish if they could get back every moment that they'd spent laughing, crying, loving and hating while dreaming, thinking, imagining and remembering this one person. As you go about realizing the futility of this desire, you begin to think yourself as a fool to have spent every every moment laughing, crying, loving and hating while dreaming, thinking, imagining and remembering this one person.

Faye puts it much better in the climax of the Tom Hanks movie "That Thing You Do" when her long time boyfriend Jimmy breaks up with her. She sadly admits,

"I have wasted thousands and thousands of kisses on you. Kisses that I thought were special because of your lips and your smile and all your color and life. I used to think that was the real you when you smiled. But now I know that you don't mean any of it, and you just save it for all your songs. Shame on me for kissing you with my eyes closed so tight."

Chain se humko kabhi

Chain se humko kabhi, aap ne jeene na diya
Zeher bhi chaha agar, peena to peene na diya

Chand ke rath mein, raat ki dulhan jab jab aayegi
Yaad humaari, aap ke dil ko, tadapaa jaayegi
Aap ne jo hain diyaa, woh to kisi ne na diya

Zeher bhi chaha agar, peena to peene na diya

Aap ka gham jo, is dil mein din raat agar hoga
Soch ke yeh dam ghutataa hai, phir kaise guzar hoga
Kaash na aati apni judaai, maut hi aa jaati
Koi bahaane chain humaari, rooh to paa jaati
Ek pal hasnaa kabhi, dil ki lagi ne na diya

This was the song I found myself humming when again today I was made to run around thanks to the Admin Section at NCL. People in my lab think however its good because its made me get up from my seat. :p

I did some research on this song and found that Chain se humko kabhi...had been composed by O. P. Nayyar for the film Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye (1973). It has been very beautifully rendered by Asha Bhosle and you can just feel the sadness which is evident even in the lyrics written by S. H. Bihari. This is infact the last song that Asha Bhosle sung for O. P. Nayyar before their fallout. Very few musical instruments have been used in this song and yet its soulful. Thus, the whole weight of making the song work rests on the singer. In most of today's songs, they have hazaar things playing and yet there is no melody. I wonder how many of the singers would remember even the tunes of the songs to which they've been lending their voices currently.

Ek din fursat

Ek din fursat ne thaame haath hamaare
Le gayi us dagar pe jahan rehti hain baharein
Chal diye hum bhi ghar se ho ke kuch befikar se
Dil tha apne bharose hum the dil ke sahaare
Ek din...

Raah mein mod aaya
roshni ho gayi kam
Kuch dil ghabraaya
ke kahan aa gaye hum?
Aage us mod ke bhi
toh bahaarein nahi thi
Bhuli kuch khwaishein aur
khwaab the bas hamaare
Ek din...

Bewajah lag rahi thi
jab talaash hamari
Ek khushboo uthi aur
rut badal gayi saari
Saamne tum khade the
phelaa ke baahein
Jaise har dard mera
khud mein loge samaayein
Pal bada mukhthsar tha,
tere seene pe sar tha
Yun laga mar na jaaye
itni khushiyon ke maare
Ek din...

This song which is sung by Sunidhi Chauhan in the film Zindaggi Rocks plays in the background of the video that appears under my new page element Mood Swing. I love the lyrics specially the second stanza. I am sure when my search (talaash) ends I'll sing this part to that someone. ;)

Below is my own English translation. Couldn't succeed in rhyming in many places. :(

Anyway. Here goes...

One day leisure held my hands
Took me the road where spring was residing
We too left from home without much worry
The heart was reling on us, while on the heart we were trusting
One day...

There came a bend in the road
And the light became dim
The heart felt bewildered
Wondering where we had come?
Even beyond that bend
Nothing beautiful could be seen
Just some forgotten wishes and
Some of our dreams
One day...

Without cause was looking
This search of mine when
Arose a fragrance and
It changed the whole season then
You were standing in front
With open arms
As if my every pain
Inside you, you'll hide
The moment was short
On your shoulders my head was resting
It felt I might die
Because of all the happiness
One day...

Mother of mine

Song: Mother of mine
Singer: Neil Ried

Mother of mine you gave to me,
all of my life to do as I please,
I owe everything I have to you,
Mother sweet Mother of mine.

Mother of mine when I was young
you showed me the right way things had to be done,
without your arms where would I be,
Mother sweet Mother of mine.

Mother you gave me happiness,
much more than words can say,
I thank the lord let me breath with you,
every night and every day.

Mother of mine now I am grown
and I can walk straight all on my own,
I'd like to give you what you gave to me,
Mother sweet Mother of mine.

Mother of mine now I am grown
and I can walk straight all on my own,
I'd like to give you what you gave to me,
Mother sweet Mother of mine.
Mother sweet Mother of mine.

Yesterday being Mother's Day the above song automatically came to my mind. I remembered how as kids, and even later, my sister and I would secretly buy cards, gifts and flowers for Mummy for the special day. There used to be an excitment in making use of the pocket money which we had been saving for months.

Yesterday being Mother's Day served as a reminder of what I don't have with me anymore.

Yesterday being Mother's Day I once again felt glad realising what I had been blessed with and what I still have.

The lyrics of the next song speak exactly this.

Song: That wonderful mother of mine
Singer: Eddy Arnold
Writers: Walter Goodwin, Clyde Hager

The moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of that wonderful mother of mine.
The birds never sing but a message they bring
Of that wonderful mother of mine.
Just to bring back the time, that was so sweet to me,
Just to bring back the days, when I sat on her knee.
You are a wonderful mother,
Dear old Mother of mine.
You'll hold a spot down deep in my heart,'
Till the stars no longer shine.
Your soul shall live on forever,
On through the fields of time.
For there'll never be another to me,
Like that wonderful Mother of mine
I pray ev'ry night to our Father above,
For that wonderful mother of mine.
I ask Him to keep her as long as He can
That wonderful mother of mine.
There are treasures on earth,
that make life seem worthwhile,
But there's none can compare to my mother's smile.
You are a wonderful mother,
Dear old Mother of mine.
You'll hold a spot down deep in my heart,
'Till the stars no longer shine.
Your soul shall live on forever,
On through the fields of time.
For there'll never be another to me,
Like that wonderful Mother of mine

Talat Mahmood Songs

Talat Mahmood is Daddy's favourite. Today I found myself going through the lyrics of some of his songs. Here are ones that I simply liked.

Film: Bewafa
Lyrics: Sarshar Silani

------------------------------------------------------------
Film: Dekha Kabira Roya
Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan

-----------------------------------------------------------
Film: Chote Babu
Lyrics: Kaif Irfani

------------------------------------------------------------
Film: Ek Gaon Ki Kahani
Lyrics: Shailendra

------------------------------------------------------------
Film: Patita
Lyrics: Shailendra

-----------------------------------------------------------
Film: Chaandi Ki Deewar
Lyrics: Sahir

अश्कों ने जो पाया है वो गीतों ने दिया है
जिसपर भी सुना है कि ज़माने को गिला है

जो तार से निकली है वो धुन सबने सुनी है
जो साज़ पे गुज़री है वो किस दिल को पता है

Its rainin

For the past two days we've been having some wonderfully romantic weather thanks to the pre-monsoon showers blessing the Pune city. There are many hit Hindi film rain songs from the olden days. But my favourite is from a recent movie Fanaa. The fact that the song featuress Aamir Khan serves as an added bonus for me.

I love the lyrics of Yeh saazish hai boondon ki... which have been penned by Prasoon Joshi. I am putting them down here and am highlighting those lines that I really like. :)

Yeh saazish hain boondon ki
Koi khwaaish hain chup chup si
Yeh saazish hain boondon ki
Koi khwaaish hain chup chup si
Dekho na dekho na
Dekho na dekho na
Hawa kuch haule haule zubaan se kya kuchh bole
Kyon doori hai ab darmiyaan
Dekho na dekho na
Dekho na dekho na

Phir na hawaaein hongi itni besharam
Phir na dag mag dag mag honge yeh kadam
Ho saawan bhi seedha nahi khufia bada
Kuch toh baraste hue keh raha
Samjho na samjho na
Samjho na samjho na
Hawa kuchh haule haule zubaan se kya kuch bole
Kyon doori hai ab darmiyaan
Dekho na dekho na
Dekho na dekho na

Jugnu jaise chaahat dekho jale bujhe
Meethi si mushkil hai koi kya kare
Hmm hothon ki arzi aaise thukraao na
Saanson ki marzi ko jhuthlaao na
Choo lo na choo lo na
Choo lo na choo lo na
Hawa kuchh haule haule zubaan se kya kuchh bole
Na doori hai ab darmiyaan
Dekho na dekho na
Dekho na dekho na

Dreamland express

I caught a ride on the Dreamland Express last night
I was sailing on an ocean of blue
And right there by my side, much to my surprise, was you

I said, come over here baby, let me look in your eyes
Let me see the very heart of you
And I couldn't believe it, to conceive that my dream would come true

Cause you said, hey there sweet daddy, everything is alright
For miles there's not a telephone line
There's not a soul to disturb us dont be nervous
Just come and be mine

You said, let me be the end of your rainbow
Let me be the stars up above
Let me be the one that you long for darling
Let me be the one that you love, oh, oh
Let me be the one that you love

And now it's four in the mornin', Honey I can't sleep
I can't seem to get you out of my mind
I keep tossin' and turnin', yearnin' for the sun to shine

I'd like to send you a ticket on the Dreamland Express
And take you far away with me
I've got a vision of heaven and you livin' there with me

Let me be the end of your rainbow
Let me be the stars up above
Let me be the one that you dream of baby
Let me be the one that you love, oh, oh
Let me be the one that you love

These are the lyrics of the song "Dreamland express" by John Denver. A friend of mine sent me its audio file a couple of years. The moment I heard it I fell in love... with the song. And its been my favourite since then. I specially love the parts that I have highlighted in red. :D

Bus kya?

Sometimes its really difficult getting a bus from NCL to my home. Normally 4-5 buses come one after the other. Wrong timing can result in a waiting period of half an hour easily. Like it happened today. On such occasions I end up humming songs with the theme of intezaar and yaad running through them. Check these out:

Inteha ho gayi intezaar ki
Aayi na kuch khabar mere yaar ki
Hai humein yeh yakin
Bewafa woh nahi
Phir wajah kya hui
Intezaar ki...

Yaad kiya dil ne kahan ho tum
Jhoomti bahaar hai kahan ho tum
Pyar se pukaar lo jahan ho tum...

Yaad aa rahi hai
Teri yaad aa rahi hai
Yaad aane se tere jaane se
Jaan jaa rahi hai...

Jab geet baharon ne gaaye
Tum yaad aaye
Jab mehke shaamon ke saaye
Tum yaad aaye...

Tumhe yaad karte karte
Jaayegi umr saari
Tum le gaye ho apne
Sang neend bhi hamari...

Thankfully the last one finally succeeded in getting me a bus this evening. :)

Jaane kyon?

Jaane kyon log pyar karte hain?
Jaane kyon woh kisi pe marte hain?
Jaane kyon? Jaane kyon?
Jaane kyon? Jaane kyon? Jaane kyon?

Pyar mein sochiye toh bas gham hain
Pyar mein jo sitam bhi woh kam hai
Pyar mein sar jhukana padhta hai
Dard mein muskurana padhta hai
Zeher kyon zindagi mein bharte hain?
Jaane kyon log pyar karte hain?
Jaane kyon? Jaane kyon?
Jaane kyon? Jaane kyon? Jaane kyon?

Pyar bin jeene mein rakha kya hai?
Pyar jisko nahin woh tanha hai

Pyar sau rang leke aata hai
Pyar hi zindagi sajaata haiJaane kyon?
Log chup-chup ke pyar karte hain
Jaane kyon saaf kehte darte hain?
Jaane kyon? Jaane kyon?
Jaane kyon? Jaane kyon? Jaane kyon?

Pyar bekaar ki museebat hai
Pyar har tarah khoobsurat hai
Pyar se hum dur hi acche
Arrey pyar ke sab roop hain sache
Pyar ke ghat jo utarte hain
Doobte hain na woh ubharte hain
Pyar toh khair sabhi karte hain
Jaane kyon aap ki mukarte hain
Jaane kyon? Jaane kyon?
Jaane kyon? Jaane kyon? Jaane kyon?

Above are the lyrics of one of my favourite songs from the movie Dil Chata Hai. The film tells the story of Aakaash (Aamir Khan), Sameer (Saif Ali Khan) and Siddhartha (Akshaye Khanna). As different are the three friends in their personalities as varied are their outlooks to love and their journies to it. Among them Siddhartha is the one who understands the true meaning of love while Sameer seems to continually fall in and out of it. Aakaash on the other hand has decided not to cross paths with love at all until Shalini (Preity Zinta) makes him realise ki pyar faisle se nahi kiya jaata bas ho jaata hai. In the song Jaane Kyon... Aakaash and Shalini put forward their views and counterviews on love. Reading through the lyrics its difficult for me to decide whose side I am on. But what about you? :D
